What makes the Learn & Master Piano course so great? We discovered quite a few things when we dug into the course content.

First off, this is the most complete learn piano dvd set out there, with 14 discs full of content included it covers more topics and styles then any other course available.

Take a look at the long list of topics covered

Second, the instructor is more the qualified, he’s a Grammy winner for heaven’s sake. Will Barrow (read his bio here) has played about every style imaginable, been a sessions musician and a professional instructor in Nashville TN. His teaching style is each to follow for beginners and he avoids some of the long winded talk a lot of other learn to play piano dvds are prone to.

Thirds, the additional teaching materials included with this course (Jam Along Cds and lesson book) are outstanding. With the lesson book alone you could learn a lot as a beginner, of course it wouldn’t be half as fun as learning with the videos.

The Jam Along Discs make practicing a lot more fun. There’s 120 tunes included, many of which you’ll be familiar with, that you can pop in your CD player and play along with as you practice.

A couple of finer points we noticed were the onscreen interactive keyboard that always shows you which keys are being played during the lesson is a huge help. Other wise you may have to rewatch a section of a lesson a couple of times to catch it. Also the multiple camera angles used give you a view of the instructors hands when he’s playing so you can watch his technique and where he moves on the keys.

Over all this is the most well rounded course to learn piano at home we’ve seen. Of course it’s a bit pricier then some other courses at $149, but when compared to a years worth of private lessons which could cost about $1200 it’s a drop in the bucket.

#2 Piano System

Piano System DVDs

Overall: star rate 5
Features: star rate 5
Quality: star rate 5
Ease of Use: star rate 5

So if Learn and Master Piano is so great how can another course even compare? Well truthfully it can’t when we compare apples to apples, how ever the Piano System isn’t quite like comparing apples to apples.

The Piano System, taught by performing pianist and instructor Nate Bosch, is a course to teach you how to play piano by ear.

So rather then focussing on a ton of different techniques, styles and theory like Learn and Master Piano this learn piano DVD is focussed on helping you learn to play what you hear.

This method of learning is great for beginners who are strictly interested in learning to play popular songs they’re familiar with, and of course if you wanted to expand your knowledge and skills at a later date there’s nothing stopping you.

NOTE: There is section of the Learn & Master Piano course that covers how to play chords and melodies by ear.

The Piano System includes 3 lesson dvds, 2 Jam Along DVD videos, 2 Jam Along Cds and a work book. It’s not as much content as Learn & Master Piano, but as mentioned, this learn to play piano dvd doesn’t teach you as much either.

The video quality on each DVD is top notch and each video lesson also uses multiple angles and an on screen keyboard to help you see what the instructor is playing.

The Piano System is still a great program and it’s about $50 less then Learn and Master Piano. If you want to learn to play by ear then this is a great course to get.
