The Piano System is a new comer on the learn piano at home market, but the instructor, Nate Bosch, is anything but new on the scene. He’s been holding workshops, teaching private lessons and performing on the Piano for over 10 years.

I’ve been a long time fan of Learn and Master Piano, the self study course published by Legacy Learning Systems, so I always go into a review of a new piano lessons dvd with the bar set high.

Learn by Ear

The entire Piano System course is centred on the idea of learning to play songs on the piano by ear. This is evident on their website and in the intro video. I found this interesting since it stands this course apart a little bit from my top choice of Learn & Master Piano.

Three Parts to the Course

There are 6 DVDs included with the Piano system with 3 of them making up the bulk of the lesson content. Nate, the instructor, teaches you how to pick out popular songs by ear and they include 16 different tracks for you to practice along with on the Jam along video DVDs and Jam Along CD.

I’m a big fan of Jam Tracks as a practice tool for all instruments, they offer a dynamic you don’t get when studying from a lesson book or while taking private lessons.

Lesson Book

The 65 page workbook included with the course is a supplemental tool that provides graphical information about topics learned during each lesson as well as additional exercises you use during practicie time. The lesson book on it’s own is a solid tool, but it’s most powerful when you use it as a reference tool after watching each DVD lesson.

Online Support

One of the downfalls of being a newer course is you have a small customer base, but hey everyone has to start somewhere. There is an online support website available where you can interact and ask questions if you get stuck. This area of the program will only become better as their customer base grows and more people begin to take part in the community.

Conclusion

If you’re someone who has taken some piano instruction before or knows a little already and want to learn to play popular songs quickly then the Piano System offers great value.

I believe that if you have a goal of really mastering the instrument and understanding the more technical points of playing the piano then you may be better off spending the extra $50 bucks on Learn and Master Piano.
